Honey Dewdrops

“… a sweet kind of melancholy.”

Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish are The Honey Dewdrops- singer-songwriters who focus on writing relevant, meaningful songs, singing tight harmonies, and developing thoughtful instrumentation. Their set up is minimal – two voices and two guitars. The duo place primary emphasis on balancing the “real” tones produced from acoustic instruments with their two voices.

The Dewdrops live outside Scottsville, Virginia in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains – an area rich in old-time, blues, and bluegrass music. The pair echo traditional American folk styles with their own singing styles and through keeping traditional songs as a mainstay in their repertoire. Wortman and Parrish also reflect the more modern sounds of country and rock music. Recognizable influences include Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris, Norman and Nancy Blake, Kate Brislin and Jody Stecher, Gillian Welch, and Lucinda Williams.

Laura Wortman sings without affectation. Her gentle but serious approach allows her to get to the heart of a song. When Parrish joins her on harmonies they blend in the warmest kind of way. Their guitars, too, are arranged to blend in a natural voice that supports but never overtakes a song. The Dewdrops feel like old friends playing in your living room.

Wortman and Parrish are interested in a “real” sound, which makes their music feel familiar and resonates deeply with audiences. “We’re interested in making music that people can see themselves in,” says Parrish.

The Honey Dewdrops were recently chosen as the winners of A Prairie Home Companion’s Annual “People in their Twenties Talent Show” in March 2008. They were chosen from a pool of 1000 entries and competed on A Prairie Home Companion’s live broadcast from the Fitzgerald Theater on March 15, 2008. Wortman and Parrish continue to tour and support artists such as Walker’s Run, Sara Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion, and The Biscuit Burners. They have put the finishing touches on an EP to be released soon.
